Etymology 2[edit]

Chinese language sources generally think about this to be a vernacular-layer descendant of Previous Chinese language (OC *kʰraːw, “decrease leg”). It, nevertheless, bears nice resemblance to the Tai etymon for “leg”, e.g. Thai ขา (kǎa, leg) < Proto-Tai *p.qaːᴬ (leg) (Yue-Hashimoto, 1976; Luo, 1992). Such similarity could also be superficial, because the Tai etymon is cognate with Proto-Kam-Sui *kwa (leg) and there’s a disagreement in rime (Schuessler, 2007).
